Automatic Updates Initiative Keynote

Automatic Updates is 1 of 5 key initiatives for Drupal 9. The goal of this initiative is to provide a secure system for automatically installing updates in Drupal, lowering the total cost of ownership of maintaining a Drupal site, improving the security of Drupal sites in the wild, and lowering the barrier to entry to using Drupal. Although Drupal has a dedicated security team to work on addressing security issues in Drupal core and contributed projects, this does not always translate into Drupal sites installing the latest security release of Drupal. In the future most security releases could be automatically installed on your site without the intervention of a developer, freeing up developer time and reducing the cost of ownership for Drupal sites. This initiative consists of many areas of work both within Drupal core and in outside libraries. In this session we will detail the key components that will make automatic updates possible and the current progress on each one. We will give a technical overview of each component and describe how you can help if you would like to get involved. We will also explain how we have been working with other open source communities such as Composer, The Update Framework and Typo3.
