In 2019, Jennifer, a Full Stack Developer, lost a large portion of her vision due to a condition known as optic neuritis. Through this experience, she found out the hard way that a majority of websites are extremely difficult to interact with for any user who cannot visually see the screen or physically interact with a mouse. Making a website accessible to all takes a lot of work, and doesn’t happen overnight, but shouldn’t deter any creator or developer from taking the first steps towards digital accessibility. Jennifer along with Michaela, Aten’s Accessibility Specialist, will cover the tools we recommend for testing, common errors our accessibility team tends to see and how to resolve them, as well as review a site’s functionality with a live example.

By the end of this workshop, attendees will have the tools to help remove the initial barrier towards digital accessibility, and open their site to a whole new group of users. These actionable takeaways include the steps for starting an internal accessibility review and a basic outline for their own accessibility statement.
