Automating Drupal Migration

Hemangi Gokhale

The latest version of Drupal i.e. Drupal 8 is all gearing up to be released soon. With the release of Drupal 8, Drupal 6 will officially become unsupported over a period of 3 months.

Migrating your existing Drupal site directly to D8 will not be feasible as the stable releases of the contributed modules is going to take some time.

Also, Drupal 7 will be supported till Drupal 9 comes along which is tentatively be a long time from now. Hence, it is feasible to upgrade your site to the latest Drupal 7 version right now.

To make migration easier there is a migration script that we have created. It highly expedites the migration of Drupal 6 site to latest release of Drupal 7.

What we will discuss

  • Migrating Sites from Drupal 6 to 7

  • Why is it difficult?

  • Introducing Migration Automation script

Possibilities in further development of the script

  • Migrate module in Drupal 8 - content migration

  • Creating sites in Drupal 7, which will be easier to migrate in D8.

  • Using Migration Automation script – Detailed Demo

  • Converting Drupal 7 modules to Drupal 8 (Not a part of automation script)

  • Set-up a Drupal 8 module (Not a part of automation script)

  • Debugging Drupal 8 module upgrades (Not a part of automation script)

  • Upgrading 7 themes to 8 (Not a part of automation script)

If you are considering migrating a site from D6 to D7, or are interested in how migration works, or want to build sites that can be migrated to Drupal 8 in future, this session is apt for you.
