Migration to Drupal 8
Drupal 8 core comes with refactored Migrate module to take care of migrating sites from Drupal 6 and Drupal 7 to Drupal 8. This is a migration approach for major upgrades - rather than upgrade in place. A new Drupal 8 site will be installed, and then the configuration and content of the old site is imported into new Drupal 8 site. This will provide more flexibility to the upgrade process, and will also support skipping a version in between. For example, Drupal 6 sites can be migrated directly to Drupal 8.
Drupal 8 provides a Migration API, which provides services for migrating data from one place to another. This covers only core migrations (including Link, Email, Telephone, and core CCK fields). For the vast majority of contributed modules (and all custom modules), migration plugins will have to be developed by module maintainers.
This session will talk about what goes into planning a data migration from Drupal 6 and Drupal 7 to 8 and how to create Custom Migration Plugins for custom or contributed modules of Drupal 6 and Drupal 7 so that they can be easily migrated to Drupal 8.
