The New Mobile Web Trinity: ServiceWorker, Push, and App Manifests

callahad

Mozilla and Google are working together to close the gaps between native apps and the mobile web. At the end of 2015, we identified three key missing capabilities in the web: installation, offline support, and push notifications.

We're now moving quickly to finish standardizing and implementing specifications to address each of these shortcomings: ServiceWorker, Web Manifests, and Web Push. This talk will cover the essence of those APIs, including:

  1. How to use ServiceWorker as a programmable proxy / cache for your website, which allows you to make resources available offline.
  2. How to use Push to send notifications to your website's users, even when they don't have your site open.
  3. How to use a Web Manifest to make your site installable just like a native app.

This talk will cover the essence of each of these APIs, and show how we can create mobile web experiences that are virtually indistinguishable from native.
