Drupal - a developers' CMS only?

gargsuchi

In this session, I plan to talk about how the transition of Drupal from D7 to D8 has inadvertently made Drupal and developers only CMS.

In my opinion, in order for increased adoption, a CMS needs to be as user-friendly as possible. And this is where we are going in reverse for Drupal.

  • Evaluation of Drupal is still not easy.
    • Dries's blog (https://dri.es/we-made-drupal-a-lot-easier-to-evaluate) mentions D8.6 is now easier to evaluate - but those improvements have been made for local setups. Not for a non-developer trying to get a Drupal site up and running.
    • A non-developer persona still needs to go through hosting providers to evaluate Drupal. Which is really counter-intuitive.
    • There is no single (Drupal community supported) hosting provider.
    • Services like https://simplytest.me are too short-lived.

Is that the path we want to take for Drupal's future

  • What can be done?
    • We should make a site comparable to wordpress.com  - which allows Drupal8 evaluations using only UI.
    • Create UI tools - for module management. Just `composer` based process is too restrictive for non-developers..
