Going Dark: The Ethical Implications of Willfully Dishonest Design

agarzola

We go to great lengths identifying design patterns that hinder our users’ ability to complete a task, to document better solutions, and to avoid lack of clarity. But what about design patterns that are intentionally unclear? These are known as dark patterns, and they are designed to be dishonest. As web creators, we are compelled to do right by our users. Let’s fight back.

In this session, we’ll explore some of the more common dark patterns found on the web, and the resources at your disposal to learn more about them. You’ll come away equipped with the knowledge to build a strong case against dark patterns in your projects.

Doing right by our users is everyone’s business, so this session is for web creators of all stripes!
