The Next 3 Years of Commerce

We released Commerce 2.0 in September 2017, the first stable release of our eCommerce platform built on Drupal 8. We rewrote the entire platform from scratch as a result of the massive changes in Drupal itself and our own lessons learned during our work on Drupal 7.

After celebrating the release at DrupalCon Vienna, we switched to a monthly release model based on a publicly documented roadmap, continuously shipping important bug fixes and new features to our users. A year later, Commerce on Drupal 8 now supports over 6,500 live sites built by dozens of agencies from all over the world. Amazingly, 90% of those sites are running the last two monthly releases!

However, our industry is not standing still. Even in the last 3 years, we’ve seen new technologies like Gatsby come to market that are changing the way we build web applications. With Drupal 9 announced, it’s time to forecast our own next 3 years to see what the future holds for Commerce and to lay out our case for its enduring value.

In this session, the Commerce project maintainers will cover:

- Improvements to the evaluator and project kick-off experience through an attractive default theme (Belgrade) and  support module (Commerce Demo)
- REST API developments and reference implementations (Cart Flyout) that make Commerce a formidable solution for headless sites
- Project roadmap for 2019, including plans for Drupal 9 / Commerce 3.0 and beyond
- Our new branding, its backstory, and our goals for sustained contribution
