Practical human centered design with U.S. Web Design System 2
Description: Human centered design (HCD) works and is the right thing to do — particularly when it comes to government websites and services, but what's a good balance between flexibility and consistency? An excess of choice can slow down design work and make communication between designer and developer unnecessarily granular, but rigid conformity can clash with HCD best practices. We'll look at real case studies from 18F government clients and talk about how The U.S. Web Design System v2 (USWDS) makes it easier to act on feedback and get improved design into production. We'll talk about how to use HCD and USWDS together to design for flexibility and consistency — a challenge with any CMS.
Who it's for: This session is for developers interested in using Drupal and a design system to create a flexible, effective government CMS that can adapt to real user needs.
Goal: The goal is to demonstrate how we can make human centered design simpler and more efficient with the USWDS 2 and its design toolkit. We want to stress the importance of user testing and using feedback to make improvements — and show how USWDS 2 provides the design language to facilitate this progress. And we want to encourage developers to build with USWDS 2 to improve designer/developer communication and overall consistency to build trust in federal government resources.
Who we are:
Aviva Oskow, visual designer, 18F
Dan O. Williams, visual designer and front end developer, product manager of the U.S. Web Design System
