Searching the Stacks: Georgia Tech Library's Drupal 8 Design

iamrentman

This session is a 30 minute case-study that covers the design details of the Georgia Tech Library’s brand new Drupal 8 website (launching early 2019). The project's goal was to transform a dated design and hard-coded HTML/PHP website into a top shelf Drupal 8 platform. As a rather monumental upgrade for the Library, several key design-related requirements were included in the RFP –  simplified navigation, a reworked search function, a clean homepage design, and alignment with the Institute’s most current visual brand standards. What materialized throughout our engagement was an exciting partnership that resulted in a highly performant and accessible experience that caters directly to specific user groups. This upgrade has placed the Georgia Tech Library in a position of leadership not only among their on-campus peers but also within the higher ed community. With this project as a backdrop, design insights and processes will be discussed.

Key topics and takeaways attendees will walk away with include:

  • Interpreting and synthesizing persona research – connecting the dots of user journeys

  • Design research – setting the stage with information and inspiration

  • Navigating an in-process brand refresh – making connections to ensure success

  • Designing flexible components – creating a toolkit for a highly customizable content editing experience

  • Agile design – keeping pace with consistent feedback

  • Design review & QA – active participation in code reviews to refine design details

  • Collaborating for success – working with both external and internal stakeholders to ensure excellent outcomes

All skill levels are welcome and no previous knowledge is required to attend.
