Designing for an aging population

rainbreaw

Thanks to technology, medical advances, and general cultural shifts, people are living longer than ever before. As we age, our bodies (and brains!) change. By age 40, our vision begins to decline; around age 60, we become susceptible to cognitive changes. As designers and builders of the digital landscape, we have the opportunity to empower our aging populations to continue to live full lives. We will explore how.

Session slides for designing for an aging population

Learning Objectives

  • Why does designing for an aging population matter, including how to sell it to your team and/or client
  • What design considerations can we include for aging populations? We will define some of the needs, including the obvious ones resulting from declining vision and hearing, and the onset of physical trembles, as well as the less simple and more difficult to discuss changes such as cognitive decline
  • Clear paths for how we can incorporate these considerations into our designs

Target Audience

The target audience for this session is anyone responsible for defining and/or designing a product. This includes business analysts, project managers, user experience designers, visual designers, motion designers, and agency leadership. Lead engineers who create engineering design specs will also benefit.
