Drupal as a Digital Asset Management System

For more than ten years, we have been quietly building up a completely free and open-source digital asset management platform in the library, archive, and museum community. We call it Islandora, and it is deployed at more than 300 institutions across the globe and is built and maintained by a vibrant community of volunteers from those institutions.

Together, we solve a key use case for Drupal: long term storage and management of digital assets. This session will present not just an overview of a way to expand Drupal into a tool for digital preservation, but also a look at how we solve the complex needs of the “GLAM” (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) community. By bringing together solutions from the world of Drupal contributed modules in novel ways and using scalable microservices to fill in the gaps, what was built for libraries can work for many other domains.
