JavaScript is coming to eat you

broeker

Drupal is a shining star of the web, with a remarkable 20 year history and a proven ability to power some of the world’s largest brands and websites. WordPress has enjoyed even greater success, and now powers more than 30 percent of the entire web.

But in just the last 5 years, the landscape has shifted dramatically in ways that are fundamentally changing how and what we build.

Monolithic platforms like Drupal and WordPress are no longer the obvious or default solutions, and it is now just a matter of time before MOST websites and web applications are built using something other than a traditional, server-based CMS.

Learning Objectives

Join us on a journey into JavaScript’s rapid and seemingly inevitable rise to the top through the lens of a seasoned Drupal developer and agency owner who continues to make his own mistakes on the path toward a better web.

This session will explore:

  • How quickly and why these changes are happening
  • Who will be most affected in the next 5 years
  • The reasons everybody is so excited about Gatsby, the JAMstack, and APIs
  • What “serverless” and “cloud-native” and the other buzzwords really mean
  • Why things that were very hard even 2-3 years ago are now easy
  • Steps you can take today to get your toes in the water
  • Why Drupal still matters in this ecosystem (perhaps more than ever)

The job of the modern web developer is to create amazing experiences that help our users navigate an increasingly noisy barrage of devices, networks, content, and tools.

Content management systems like Drupal may play a central role in this new world, but they are now a secondary concern. This session will help you understand why and what you can do about it.

Target Audience

This session is for anybody who is currently building, selling, or funding projects using a traditional CMS like Drupal or WordPress, and especially those who want to more firmly understand the massive paradigm shift of the past 5 years (and how it will affect us over the next 5 years.)

Prerequisites

Attendees will get the most out of this session if they have a basic understanding of how we have been building websites for the past 15+ years, and a curiosity for learning how that is quickly changing.
