She works hard (enough) for the money

manningpete

Through one-on-one conversations, I have helped dozens of talented developers understand their value, and ask for and get more money for their work.  Getting fairly paid is fundamental to equity in the workplace, and I will talk about strategies women, LGBTQ folks, people of color, or anyone who is underpaid can use to negotiate higher wages and rates.

As a mediocre developer with a liberal arts degree, I will share what has worked for me in my 30 year career in tech, both as a freelance contractor and full time employee, as well as terrible mistakes I have made.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, attendees will

  • understand how to research compensation to know what other developers in their area/field/experience level earn
  • know how to ask for and justify more money whether they are contractors or  full-time employees
  • understand the pitfalls of discussing salary history with potential employers, as well as the necessity of discussing with your colleagues

Target Audience

This session will be directed toward developers from groups underrepresented in tech (women, people of color, LGBTQ) but will benefit any underpaid developers.

Prerequisites

Attendees will get the most out of this session if they have ever charged money for their time or work.
