A Drupal City

The City of San Francisco is a Drupal house. Having made the move to Drupal 7 two years ago, the City has been learning what works and what doesn't about its current website, and has started thinking radically about the future.

Moving beyond a simple content site where we tell users how to do things, we are now developing a brand new city website in Drupal 8, where residents can *actually do* those things online. As part of our approach we are:

  • Using 'headless' Drupal to make it possible to develop online transactions with a consistent look and feel
  • Creating content communities that support each other to make a better online experience
  • Building micro-services that provide the basic building blocks of digital services
  • Developing better governance models that give content editors freedom, within 'guard rails'

We are definitely not there yet, but we're learning lots of lessons along the way about how to go about a large change project like this.

Attendees of all levels of experience will learn how a large government entity like the City of San Francisco is using headless Drupal 8 to build digital services, and will hear the good, bad, funny, and interesting lessons we are learning along the way!
