The Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG), located in Corning, New York, is dedicated to the art, history, and science of everything glass.  Founded in 1951 by Corning Glass Works, the Museum boasts a collection of over 45,000 glass items spanning 35 centuries, a comprehensive collection of historical and research manuscripts on the art and science of glassmaking, and plays host to a plethora of galleries, exhibits, and demonstrations on the art of glassmaking.  The Museum is the 3rd most visited museum in the State of New York, outranked only by the Guggenheim and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In October of 2016, the Museum organized and hosted a summit for museum professionals to discuss e-commerce, its role in extending the mission of museums in general, and some of the conceptual and pragmatic aspects of commercial transactions conducted on the Internet.  The outcomes of this summit were used as the basis for the Museum’s embarkment on a strategic revamping of the its e-commerce endeavors.   In 2017, the Museum began a project to update and upgrade its flagship commerce site, an existing Drupal 7 site using Commerce 1.0, to Drupal 8 and Commerce 2.0.  The CMoG development team reached out to its support partner, Promet Source, to assist in this endeavor.

Join the CMoG development team and Promet Source as we discuss the journey to roll out a newly redesigned e-commerce site for the Museum powered by Drupal 8 and Commerce 2.0 that showcases the works of art available for purchase online as well as signups for classes and events hosted by the Museum.  We’ll talk about its integration with the Museum’s internal ERP systems as well as some of the technical challenges encountered along the way.  We will preview the site and chat about the experiences that the two organizations had codeveloping this project and the overall impressions of Commerce 2.0 and Drupal 8, as well as discuss the new site’s contribution and support of the primary mission of the Museum and its role in the Museum’s overall strategic focus.
