Content migration tools: leading cross-platform solutions overview, build vs. buy dilemma rationalization
Session Goals and Objectives:
Educate user community on established cross-platform content migration tools and rationalize buy vs. build decision
Audience:
No prior Drupal experience is required, but knowledge of content management process (CMS-agnostic) is necessary. This session is targeting users of other content management systems who are evaluating Drupal as well as new customers tasked with consolidating/migrating their web properties to Drupal
Primary target: Business Analysts, Developers, Project Managers, and Content authors/managers
Session Agenda & Focus Area:
- Content migration methodology/common mistakes have been well covered with numerous publications/white papers (we will recap key lessons learned)
- Content migration tools, however, are often ignored and development team is creating custom migration scripts from scratch. Most project plans underestimate migration and cleanup/validation efforts or simply rely on the end users to re-create (copy/paste) their pages in the new CMS. This section will review available web content migration automation tools and explain their pros/cons, limitations, and costs to come up with optimal build vs. buy scenarios
- Drupal 8 includes a powerful built-in migration system for importing content into your site. It is designed to handle data from Drupal 6 or 7 and is built around a plugin-based architecture, which allows importing of data from any external data source (but users have to write their own source plugin). Creating such plugins for older CMS (Interwoven, OpenText and others) creates significant challenges. We will be exploring capabilities & provide comparison of these migration tools:
- Proventeq, http://www.proventeq.com/migration-to-drupal
- Kapow Katalyst
- CMS2CMS
- Siteport
- SwipeSites
Session attendees will be able to streamline creation of new sites with faster time to market, ultimately meeting and possibly exceeding project timelines and budgets. This session will also be valuable to project managers and senior management with understanding of migration process, efforts estimation, dependencies and content validation efforts
