Embracing Open-source Thinking for Better Sustainability

mgifford

Much of the Internet is driven by open-source software. For the most part, the communities that build this software have been driven by performance, features and fun, not sustainability.

According to a a 2008 SMART 2020 study, the Information Technology sector is responsible for 2% of global Greenhouse Gas emissions and that consumption is growing rapidly. If global climate change is the challenge of our times, what is the IT sectors role in addressing this?

Can large open-source communities, who have built the Internet, be engaged to reduce this global impact?

As an optimist, Mike believes that there are natural allies who would be interested in supporting more sustainable defaults. This talk will focus on how to engage with open-source communities to help measure and reduce our CO2 emissions.

After attending this presentation hopefully you’ll be inspired to look at performance again with fresh eyes and have a new appreciation for simpler designs.
