Of horses, water, & getting them to drink--Challenges and solutions in getting your open source company to contribution
Though we "believe" in open source and "know" contribution is a good thing for all of us, it turns out that many companies and their developers struggle to incorporate contribution into their developers' routine. Why do we struggle with this if the benefits are so obvious? In 2015, Chris Jansen carried out an academic study into this area, interviewing dozens of open source business people, developers, and community members from around the world. He turned up unexpected gaps in company cultures, assumptions, missed chances, and more.
In this session, Chris and Jeffrey A. "jam" McGuire discuss his study, analyse the results, and present some proven, actionable tactics--tested, improved developer workflows and practical suggestions to better unify our beliefs about open source contribution and our actions.
