Organising Self-Organising Teams
The development of Drupal is an example self-organisation operating at a grand scale. Contributors and maintainers share ideas, collaborate, and coordinate development tasks across a globally distributed team of thousands.
If that's possible, shouldn’t it be relatively straightforward for smaller, co-located development teams to self organise and successfully complete less ambitious projects without a great deal of management and guidance?
If it were that easy, project managers would have been looking for a different career some time ago.
I’ll share my own experience as a project manager and look at case studies to examine the reality of self organisation on actual projects. We'll explore the factors that lead to a high level, or a lack of self organisation, including:
-
Scope, time and budget
-
Methodology and process
-
Management style and leadership
-
Team structure and roles
-
Personality and behaviour
-
Organisational culture
This session will encourage you think about how self-organised your teams currently are, look at the factors that are influencing them, and provide you with tips and techniques to encourage more self-organisation on your projects.
