Thunder – a D8 Distribution from Publishers for Publishers

daniel.bosen

Burda Media, a leading German publishing house, is migrating 20+ brand websites like playboy.de, instyle.de, elle.de, harpersbazaar.de from various legacy systems to Drupal 8.

In this session, Daniel Bosen - Lead Developer – and Collin Müller – Business Development Manager - explain how Burda achieves that by creating their own common code base in a new distribution called “Thunder”, which is incrementally changing and expanding with each new brand.

Goals of the overall migration project are to

  • keep overall maintenance low

  • work with a small centralized team to oversee the distribution

  • give the publishing brands the opportunity to work with freelancers, own staff or agencies of their own choice when developing their specific features in a de-centralized way

  • enable these brands to take advantage of the developments of all other brands.

Instead of defining a massive project which would cover all or most requirements of its brands, Burda decided to start small and enhance functionality with every new project. With this method, every new launch stands on the shoulders of the previous one, while also providing older projects with newly developed features. As Burda’s brands range from pure content sites to video sites to communities and to e-commerce sites, the powerful new D8 distribution “Thunder” is adding very distinct features in every new project, developing toward a very comprehensive, publisher-specific CMS.

Burda Media decided to open-source Thunder (thunder.org) and invite all publishers worldwide to freely use Burda’s developments and of course to join the community.

Daniel will present the development infrastructure and project management support that were implemented starting with the first Drupal 8 site (playboy.de), defining workflows which made it possible to start working on that small base and getting new projects (e.g. instyle.de, elle.de) up and running faster, backporting improvements.

Collin will share his experiences in Thunder Projects from a business and operations perspective.
