Low code, past, present and future

Alejandro Moreno Lopez

There is a huge demand on developers and software engineers while companies everywhere are struggling to cover the demand for them. That may sound like good news for us as developers and people working on the IT industry, but there are some dangerous details hidden on apparently those good news.

The short term solution is not going to be on our politicians hands, with solutions like pushing the education system to bring everyone to work as developers. That can work long term, but can take years, even decades. Instead better tools that can solve the problems we are facing today are going to be needed, and ensure the lack of offer for the demand does not end up affecting negatively the whole software industry.

And indeed the market is getting crowded of solutions and tools trying to solve the problem from different angles. From big companies like Google or Amazon offering their own low code solutions, to startups, and even open source projects trying to bring development to the masses. Even existing systems are trying to transform themselves on a "non developer experience". See Gutenberg in Wordpress or Layout Builder in Drupal.

Let me walk you through the history of lowcode/nocode, what is this all about, the latest trends, what solutions are out there, how can we use them in Drupal, where is the market going and, most importantly let's open the debate on how this will affect Drupal and the CMS market. Is this going to be a threat to the CMS scenery, like Drupal, Wordpress or Joomla? Is it going to be the next big opportunity?
