What maintaining a large Drupal module is really like.

Without contribution, there would be no Drupal.

Our beloved (or hated) framework does not rely on core maintainers alone, but countless of contributors worldwide who help build the ecosystem around it. One of these key contributions is the vast amount of modules that can be found on drupal.org.

Having maintained one of these large modules for about seven and a half years now, I've seen my fair share of ups and downs. While contributing to other large projects and core, I've noticed others are struggling with the same issues I am or have taken decisions to make their lives as maintainers easier similar to the ones I have.

If you haven't guessed it by now: It's not all sunshine and rainbows in maintainerland :) Yet we keep fighting the fight and building our modules.

During this session, I want to lay bare the things that make maintainership hard, but also point out the positive things that motivate us to keep going. In the process, I'd like to put forward a few suggestions that might make life easier for module maintainers.
