Speaker training for underrepresented Drupalists - Part III

aburke626

This is part of a three-part workshop intended to help underrepresented individuals in the Drupal community (BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, women, nonbinary individuals, people with disabilities, and more) who are interested in public speaking overcome their fears, develop a pitch, and give a talk. Workshop presented by the Drupal Diversity and Inclusion group.

Part I: July 14 23:15 UTC
Part II: July 15 23:15 UTC
Part III: July 16 23:15 UTC

These workshops are a great fit for you if you’ve ever felt uncomfortable about speaking at events, or wanted to present but found yourself wondering what you would talk about or doubting your own expertise. They’re also really helpful for speakers of any experience level who want to brush up on their skills - everyone is welcome!

As this is usually an all-day workshop, we’ll be doing things a little differently. The 45 minute sessions will be less interactive, but followed by an informal working session Zoom where participants can join in to work on the “homework” for each session. The next day’s session will build upon the previous day, so ideally participants should find time to complete the homework for each session if they’re unable to come to the working session afterwards.

In Part I, we’ll cover:

  • Impostor syndrome - why you - yes, you - should speak!
  • What you’ll get out of speaking
  • Finding a topic
  • Picking a format

In Part II, we’ll cover:

  • Writing a pitch - how to tailor it to your audience
  • Coming up with a great title
  • Creating your talk - starting with an outline

In Part III, we’ll cover:

  • Writing your bio - everyone’s least favorite part made bearable!
  • Becoming a better and more confident speaker
  • Creating great slides
