The Benefits of Management Frameworks

greg.harvey

Many DrupalCon attendees will have significant management responsibilities as part of their job. At a higher level, you might be a business owner, director, CEO, CTO, and your responsibilities are more obvious. But it's not just the boardroom who have significant management responsibilities. You might also be a manager in charge of a significant team or an important system if you're a project manager, development team lead, systems manager, etc.

One of the problems with "management" as a discipline is it often isn't taught to people. It's something people often end up adopting (or maybe getting pushed into) for a number of reasons - perhaps they care more than anyone else about a particular thing, perhaps there is simply no one else with the necessary domain knowledge, perhaps they have the personality. And yet, good management is critical to effective business growth, it's key to being efficient, organised and consequently profitable. Profitable enough to make the next step forward.

That's where management frameworks can really help you. When you think of management frameworks, you usually think of scary standards, like ISOs and ITIL and Prince2, but they're really not where it starts. The reality is most people already have management frameworks in place, they just don't realise. Helping your managers recognise their structures, apply them consistently and drive them forward will help your business go from strength to strength. And it will also help them feel more confident in their role, having clear tools and direction.

The goal of this session is to help people understand what a management framework is, understand how to get to grips with whatever it is they have already and turn it into a model for continuous improvement, growth and (potentially) future certification (if you care about that sort of thing).
