BUILDING A DRUPAL-BASED SAAS BUSINESS
This session will present a case study of a business that began as a Drupal agency serving government customers in 2011, evolved to focus exclusively on building and commercializing the a specific Drupal Distribution by 2013, and then successfully selling the company to a larger software-as-a-service (SaaS) company in 2014.
We will then address lessons learned from each stage of the development of this business, including Drupal-specific considerations around:
- Corporate structure
- Market definition
- Business models and pricing
- Talent/hiring
- Open source licensing
- Drupal architectural considerations (for non-engineers)
- Building Drupal-based products vs custom Drupal websites
- Leveraging Drupal on IaaS vs Paas vs SaaS
- Competition, "coopetition" and artnerships
- Sales & marketing
Business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs will leave the session armed with a roadmap for building a scalable SaaS business on Drupal.
Presenter Andrew Hoppin founded NuCivic in 2011 after leaving his job launching high-profile government Drupal websites as a CIO in New York State. NuCivic was sold in 2014 to GovDelivery Inc., which serves 1200 government customers in the USA and Europe.
