Even Superheros get tired

mortendk

We have over the last 10+ years build a world class cms thats enterprise ready but its build on volunteers shoulders. Its hard work, no one is paid & the only real benefit you get is that you know you did something, or if your lucky somebody mention you name in a book or blogpost.

We have huge burnouts after each major release, and its not different this time around.
I have been part of the group that wanted to rebuild Drupal 8 Theming experience a task that have taken over 6 years, have probably cost me the better part of at least on releationship, and i have countless time sworn to eater burn down everything or just walk away... "cause NOBODY seems to understand X - and they are all F.... Idiots .... and Aaaaaaaarggh ".
and yes i got burned out - But never Rage Quit (tm)

Its Not the work itself, but by all the never ending disucssions & never ending circles of non desisssions & ever little snowflake that wanted to have their say, and the nidpicking in to every detail no matter if it was a real issue of not.

Agenda.

  • Almost 10 years no burnout - then i hit the wall
  • King of the North - Responsibility matters, but it gives gray hair.
  • What i could have done differently (& where the Drupal Project could be better)
  • What we have to change - yes we do.
  • Social capital - why it matters (dont be an asshole, but if you are you paid up front)
  • Dont walk away - just go the bench and take 5.
  • 30.000 developers - how to make em agre (You dont have to react on every snowflake)
  • Secret super power awesomesauce - how to make it
  • You can also be the sidekick (how to support the superhero)
  • Devils is in the details that dont matter in 2 months.

This will be a combination of stories from my 10 years of Drupal Community work, the succe's and epic fails that I have seen & have experienced on my own body (yes theres scars) + a few completely blunt and non filtered opinions on how to build you self up to with stand the "Drupal Burnout"
