Experiences with Pattern Driven Development
In recent years the increasing use of Pattern Guides has been a breakthrough in improving the process of developing responsive websites. I previously presented the highly successful approach we used with Lush Cosmetics for the development of their website.
In this session I'll talk about how we've taken this process forward to use tools such as PatternLab and Hologram
Initially, we'll briefly recap the theory of Pattern Guides and the concepts of atomic design before digging into the specifics of implementing such a technique in Drupal.
However, it's not all unicorns and rainbows - we'll also address the downsides and complications of using this technique.
Topics covered in this session:
-
A brief history of atomic design
-
Recap of the technique used for Lush.co.uk
-
How our approach has evolved for subsequent projects
-
A review of our preferred tools - PatternLab and Hologram
-
Adding Pattern Lab to your workflow
-
Pros and Cons of Pattern Driven Development
-
Practical guide to using Pattern Lab with Drupal 8.
At the end of this session you should have an understanding of the fundamentals of Pattern Guide development and how they apply to Drupal so that you can set up your own Pattern guides and get them working with Drupal 8.
