Typography on the web

ckrina

We still don’t have yet the level of control on the web as there is in print, but web design is mostly typography. We need to learn how to make better informed typographic decisions and not be put off by typography.

Unlike the old days when we had to work only with default system fonts and some standard resolutions, nowadays we have thousands of fonts to choose from and so many decisions to make regarding display size.

I will start the session laying down the bases with some basic typographic concepts like the anatomy of a letter, the line height, the baseline grid, the style or the weights.

I will continue explaining the differences and peculiarities from the typography on the web like legibility in a display, and some tips and tricks for combining fonts, picking the correct ones for UI, selecting body text or using rhythm.

I will also take a quick look into history of the web typography to explain how it has changed and how we deliver Web Fonts today. From font formats to performance and browsers, I will give some tricks to apply to your day to day work with Responsive Typography.

This session is primarily intended for themers, frontenders and web designers, but also for any developer who aims to improve its control over the frontend.

By the end of this session you’ll walk away with a solid base to take good decisions related to typography to improve your sites.
