From Whitewater to Smooth Sailing: Tools and Techniques for Development Workflow

gchaix

Have you ever had a project that you expected to be a lazy float down the river turn into a wild whitewater ride through the rapids? Has your team grown from one or two developers to five or more all working on the same project? Have your projects become progressively larger? Then this session is for you!

When projects and teams are small, it often doesn't make sense to have a lot of process or workflow. DevOps is more about quickly and efficiently getting the code from the development environment into production. As the projects get larger and more people working on them, the processes and workflow becomes more important. But how much is enough? How much is too much? This session provides some simple, easy-to-implement techniques developers and team leaders can use to smooth the development-to-production flow without overloading the team with too much process.

In this session, you'll learn:

  • The Four Rules - four simple DevOps guidelines that will save your sanity
  • How to do code review without letting it eat your life
  • Tags and Changelogs - 30 seconds to a reliable deployment
  • The Identical Triplets - Dev, Stage, and Prod - and how they can be your best friends
  • How to plug in automated testing and deployment if desired

Some basic knowledge of git is helpful, but not mandatory. This session is for experienced developers as well as beginners who find themselves working on larger projects and teams.
