This session will present the experience and lessons learned from the ongoing Google Summer of Code (GSoC) project to port the print module to Drupal 8. The objective is to provide others with the experience of the mentors and the student in applying to a GSoC scholarship and how to manage the work to arrive at a successful completion of the project. The presenters are the co-mentors for the GSoC project and the student*.
In 2015, several ideas were suggested as possible Drupal GSoC projects, many of them focusing on porting popular Drupal modules to Drupal 8. Porting the print module was one of the selected projects, and the top-ranked project as ranked by the mentors. As required, the proposal was fully written by the student, but a good part of it
The session will focus on the following points:
- What is the Google Summer of Code, and how to suggest a Drupal project
- Student application, the search for mentors, and the Drupal GSoC ladder
- Creating a successful proposal to the GSoC, advice to students and mentors
- Review of the proposed projects
- Winning the scholarship, preparing the student for the work ahead
- Tools used to support the project management
- Project management methodology
- Cooperation between mentors and students
- Mid-term and final evaluations
- Aftermath of the project, maintenance and continued participation in the Drupal community
- Lessons learned
At the moment of session submission, the GSoC program has only been going on for two weeks, but the project will finish well in advance before DC Barcelona. Although there are no assurances regarding the final outcome, we believe that the willingness already demonstrated by the student in creating a very successful proposal and in the ongoing work is a good indicator for the future.
* Note: Alok should get speaker credits, as he's an integral part of our project. He will contribute with his experience to the session, but his physical appearance may depend on a DrupalCon scholarship.
