Organising Self-Organising Teams

jason.coghlan

As members of the Drupal community we are participating in self-organisation at a grand scale. We share ideas, collaborate, and coordinate tasks across a globally distributed team of thousands. It’s a collective effort that results in a very significant output.

So, if it’s possible to self-organise and build Drupal itself, shouldn’t it be relatively easy for your own development teams to be self-organising and successfully complete less ambitious projects without significant project management overhead?

Using case studies we’ll look at how self-organisation works in practice and hear stories about the factors that influence it, including:

  • Project scope, time and budget

  • Methodology and process

  • Management style and leadership

  • Team structure and roles

  • Personality and behaviour

  • Organisational culture

By the end of this session you will have a number tips and techniques that you can use to improve the level of self-organisation on your own projects.
