Building a Modern Website for the Colorado General Assembly

choicelildice

Often, the complexities and gritty details of the legislative process intimidate people and act as a barrier to entry. But, you shouldn’t have to be an expert on the legislative process to participate in it. It was with this mindset that we set out to build a new and improved website with the Colorado General Assembly.

When they approached us in 2014, the Assembly was looking for a website that would provide details around Colorado’s legislation, offer even more visibility into state processes, and bring their online presence into the modern age. We knew Drupal was the solution to this problem which required tight integrations to databases and ties to legacy systems.

In this session, we’ll discuss the details of how we built this site, including how we took on the challenge of tackling a massive amount of government documents, our UX approach for site navigation, building an API to keep site info updated in real time, and how we worked with our local government as a partner to build a product that meets the needs of our public.
