What happens when Drupal 6 has been sunset, but you're still using Drupal 6?
Suppose you have an existing site on Drupal 6, but you haven't been able to upgrade to Drupal 8 (much less Drupal 7). For a year, Drupal 6 has had no official support. This means that there will likely be no more contrib module updates, but more importantly, there will be no more security updates to Drupal core.
