Introducing Themeless Drupal

tkoleary

We’ve heard a lot about decoupled or headless Drupal in recent years. One of the drivers behind headless is a theme layer that has grown in size, scope and responsibility to the point that it dwarfs all other concerns. If we're open to challenging assumptions we should ask ‘does Drupal need a theme at all?’

It’s become clear that themes are monolithic, outdated, and in the way. The theme system is built on wrong assumptions about how, why, and for whom today’s sites are being made, it sucks resources in a labor intensive process that appears designed to produce technical debt, and most importantly it is an obstacle in the path of the fully assembled web.

The alternative is Themeless. Themeless is not a technology, it’s an approach to site building; something you can do right now with tools we have developed. Themeless is not a rewrite of core, the theme is still there, but it’s tyranny over presentation has been toppled. What that revolution brings is the freedom to create a truly modular experiences. In essence to have fully assembled, not just partially assembled sites.

Who is it for?

This session is for everyone who cares about the future of Drupal. You don’t need to know anything about code or much about Drupal. Any experience managing, designing, editing, writing or assembling sites on any CMS or framework would suffice. Having said that, experienced front-end and back-end coders are also welcome, I’m sure you will have many questions.

What will you learn?

You’ll learn what Themeless is, how it works, and why we think it’s the future of Drupal. There will also be a step-by-step demo of how to get started with Themeless. For those who want to go deeper there will also be a Themeless bof.
