Just Slap a Div On It...Talking Tech With Non-Technical People

rvtraveller

"The styling on this is all wrong, just slap a div on it so it moves left 7.5 pixels."

"Can't you just set up a CRON that takes care of that?"

"Well, I need to make a new class that extends the primary SOAP class so I can change the request headers to get through the stunnel."

"We could make a view for that."

All of these have been statements I've seen clients make to developers or developers make to clients.  They all lead to one thing -- CONFUSION.  How do we prevent confusion?  We need to start teaching developers how to talk tech with non-technical people.  Clients (or other non-developers) will never fully understand what developers talk about so we need to make the effort to speak with them in a language they know.

Come here how to start learning to talk to non-technical stakeholders and some of the challenges you'll run in to while doing so.  You'll learn some tricks you can use with your coworkers (or even yourself) while also learning some of the pitfalls that we've encountered along the way.  You'll also learn about specific ways to explain Drupal concepts and relate them to concepts from other content management systems (WordPress) which your clients might understand.

This talk will be valuable to both developers AND non-developers.  If you're talking tech or trying to understand what your developers are saying, this session will add clarity to your future conversations!
