Should You Upgrade to Drupal 8?
Drupal 8 rocks and has been out for over a year, but are you really ready to use it in your next project?
With apologies to the converted, the answer is, it depends! Sure, Drupal 8 has great new features and is better than ever, but there are times when the case for using it is not open and shut. Does your project require contrib modules that aren't available in Drupal 8? Does your development team churn out projects in Drupal 7 with their eyes closed but they spell Symfony with "ph"? Did the project need to be done yesterday? These are some considerations that might tip the scales of justice in favour of Drupal 7.
This talk covers the ins and outs of sticking with Drupal 7 vs going all-in with Drupal 8. We go through important considerations and determine which version works best.
Things to consider:
- What type of site are you building?
- Is your site multilingual?
- How aggressive is your timeline?
- What is your reliance on contrib / custom modules?
- Do you have content to migrate?
- Do you use web services?
- Will you have multiple environments?
- Will you have a need for functional / unit testing?
- Do you need legacy browser support?
Session goals:
- Rate D7 vs D8, as they compare in common site building requirements
- Introduce users to D8's built-in features and power
- Admit that not all development teams are ready to pivot to D8
