Black in Drupal: Finding Community within Community
Black in Drupal: Finding Community within Community
The panel titled "Black in Drupal: Finding Community within Community" aims to shed light on the unique experiences and challenges faced by individuals from underrepresented backgrounds within the Drupal community. This panel discussion will provide a platform for sharing personal stories, insights, and strategies for fostering inclusivity and diversity in open-source environments in accordance with the Drupal Diversity and Inclusion (DDI) initiative.
Participants from marginalized backgrounds often encounter several challenges when entering and participating in the Drupal community. Cultural barriers of an industry that has historically been dominated by white males can inadvertently create an unwelcoming environment for those who do not typically live in that space. Seeing few people from similar backgrounds in leadership or influential roles can discourage participation and limit networking. In certain cases, harassment or discrimination may occur and be difficult to navigate and reconcile when there are few who would understand the impact.
This panel will not only highlight the challenges faced by marginalized groups but also celebrate their contributions to the Drupal community. By sharing experiences and discussing strategies for navigating the larger community and finding community that encourages diverse voices and contributions.
