Scaling quality mental health support in low income settings with two UN agencies
Scaling quality mental health support in low income settings with two UN agencies
EQUIP (Ensuring Quality in Psychological Support) is a World Health Organization & UNICEF project using Drupal to deliver mental health support training and assessments in low and middle-income settings with low connectivity.
At March 2024, EQUIP's digital platform had been used in 794 training programmes in 36 countries with 3,760 trainees resulting in 10,001 competency assessments.
Working with George Washington University, WHO and UNICEF, we designed and developed a successful platform for training & assessing mental health support workers, based on their original, paper-based methodology.
This is a whole-project case study:
- Project background, inc. end-user needs and the specific context of language, device requirements, and connectivity.
- Why a Drupal PWA (Progressive Web App) was chosen for the technical implementation.
- The process of feature prioritization with a large and diverse stakeholder group.
- A tour of the tech stack inc. Drupal modules and decoupled elements.
- How DevOps & CI (Continuous Integration), and adherence to specific practices helped speed up progress and prevent development dead-ends.
- Progression from MVP (Minimum Viable Product) in the research phase to public launch in April 2022, and enhancements to date.
- Designing and building the administration platform for translations.
- Real impacts via a wide range of delivery organizations.
EQUIP has been featured in the Scientific American, The Lancet, and multiple academic papers.
