Wringing out the MOP: Lessons Learned Creating a New Drupal Product for Membership Organizations

Wringing out the MOP: Lessons Learned Creating a New Drupal Product for Membership Organizations

Membership organizations include clubs (running, French, or photography), professional associations (accounting or medical), civic groups (neighborhood, homeowners, or parent teacher associations), service clubs (Lions or Rotary), and many other nonprofits.

These organizations have various needs including a website, membership management tools, payment processing, and communications tools.

There are numerous proprietary products that meet the needs of membership organizations, but they are typically expensive, proprietary, have limited feature sets, and suffer from vendor lock-in.

Enter the Drupal Membership Organization Platform (MOP), an open source product inspired by Drupal CMS (formerly Starshot) designed to meet the needs of membership organizations with a special focus on those with low technical and financial resources.

At the time of writing this session proposal (five months before DrupalCon), the MOP project is in the ideation phase. By DrupalCon, there should be a working product seeing adoption by target organizations. Regardless of the product's then status, there will be plenty to detail about the journey of starting a new Drupal product from scratch including finding collaborators, aligning on the product vision, naming it (MOP is just a working title), defining a timeline for launching a first version (and beyond), as well as implementing, testing, marketing, and supporting the product.

Join us to hear the saga and start planning your own Drupal product!
