11am - 11:15am | A user-centric experience with the USWDS: A Practical Approach Case Study: Bixal
Every day at Bixal, we work to ensure that our Federal Agency partners are provided technology solutions and guidance that are focused on improving the services provided to the American public. Through directives from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the 21st Century Integrated Digital Experience Act, our agency partners are struggling to understand the steps necessary to meet requirements for ensuring Federal agencies are delivering a digital-first public experience and the implementation of the United States Web Design System (USWDS).
As the prime contractor supporting the USWDS, our team has been helping agencies better understand how the USWDS supports these directives and helps to ensure that the websites created for them are accessible, consistent, authoritative, and secure using the USWDS and Drupal and yet still are able to feature the unique mission of each agency. However, the task of implementing the design system can seem daunting to our partners, and the first steps are difficult.
To help demonstrate how government agencies can incrementally modernize, Bixal undertook the redevelopment of Bixal.com from a static Gatsby application and migrated it to a new Drupal application. In this presentation, Bixal will demonstrate how we approached this transition following the USWDS maturity model (https://designsystem.digital.gov/maturity-model/). Bixal began first with a focus on implementing the USWDS design principles in our work, inventoried existing site components, implemented a Storybook integration for component development, and included USWDS code and design tokens in our new Drupal theme. Bixal was able to complete this complete redevelopment in a matter of months.
11:15am - 11:30am | Case Study, Conversational Search - AI Innovations for Enhanced User Interaction: Promet Source
Martin County, Florida, and Promet Source have partnered to develop a Large Language Model chatbot that stands to transform user experience by fast-tracking access to information and resources.
We will explore Martin County's website enhancement through the integration of an advanced chatbot powered by Large Language Models (LLM) and AI technologies. Aimed at revolutionizing the way constituents interact with local government online resources, coupled with sophisticated prompt engineering, we will walk through efforts to improve the accuracy and user experience.
Citizens will benefit from quick access to the right information and answers. Their web experiences will resemble interactions with a well-informed librarian rather than haphazardly browsing and searching a website.
11:30am - 11:45pm | How Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Revolutionized the Web Utility Experience: Hounder
12:00pm - 1:00pm | Lunch Break and Lightning talk prep
1:00pm - 1:10pm | Welcome Back!, Government Summit Committee
1:10pm - 1:45pm | Look Ma’, No Hands!
When the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) mandated that we use Gutenberg as the content editor UI for all their Presidential Library and Museum websites, we balked.
After all, in the 10+ years since Gutenberg emerged, it has not had many downloads. But the Governors at NARA knew something we didn't.
After getting our hands on Gutenberg, we fell in love, so much that we have helped maintain the module. Now, we recommend Gutenberg to all our clients.
We have also built USWDS components into Gutenberg and contributed them to the community. There are even built-in, context-sensitive tutorials, so content manager training can be done in less than one hour.
In this session, we will demonstrate how easy it is to install, configure, and use to create and manage content for government websites. By Ivan Duarte and Mike Herchel
