HIGHER ED SUMMIT | How to Design Under the Constraints and Bureaucracy of Higher Education

HIGHER ED SUMMIT | How to Design Under the Constraints and Bureaucracy of Higher Education

Adrienne Smith

Any design project will have its constraints - and for good reason! But what happens when you’re designing with and for higher education institutions, each with its own unique blend of people, opinions and let’s face it - bureaucracy? This special mix of divergent ideas, hidden (or not so hidden!) agendas, tight budgets and the unforgiving timeline of the academic year can make a project seem daunting.

And yet, within this institutional maze there are incredible opportunities - to push the envelope creatively, prioritize user-centered approaches and who knows, even unite organizations around a common vision and goal.

This session will cover three practical strategies to make bureaucracy work for (and not against) you when designing for higher ed, using examples from projects within departments, faculties and colleges.
