Drupal in Africa: From Struggles to Success – Building Open Source Impact
Africa is one of the fastest-growing technology regions in the world, yet it remains deeply underrepresented in the global Drupal ecosystem.
We have DrupalCon North America, DrupalCon Europe, and DrupalCon Asia — but no DrupalCon in Africa. Despite this, across Nigeria, East Africa, Southern Africa, and Burkina Faso, Drupal is powering a quiet revolution — driving transformation in education, healthcare, governance, and private enterprise.
This session shares the struggles, resilience, and success stories of African Drupal communities — with a strong focus on Nigeria’s leadership and the growing collaboration across the continent.
In Nigeria, Drupal powers impactful initiatives like ZODML’s open digital libraries, HEFAMAA’s health monitoring tools, LASAMBUS’s emergency response coordination, and private platforms like Dokilink (for healthcare appointments), iVentMaster (for event management), MTN’s enterprise systems, and HotelPaddie — an ambitious OTA currently being built using Drupal 11 as the backend and React as the frontend, designed to compete locally with Booking.com.
Beyond Nigeria, the story continues across East Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda), Southern Africa (South Africa), and Francophone Africa (Burkina Faso) — where Drupal communities are tackling challenges, building local DrupalCamps, and using open source to create real-world impact.
