Proposing a 'Code of Care' for the Drupal Community

Proposing a 'Code of Care' for the Drupal Community

Following on from the DrupalCon Vienna session "It’s OK to NOT be OK! Establishing support frameworks in community teams", this session will advance the proposal to create a 'Code of Care' to enshrine in policy how we care for each other in the Drupal community.

The session will explore in more depth the key themes of:

The impact of external factors: Sometimes health, family, work or other personal reasons compromise our ability to follow through on the community obligations we have committed to. This can lead to guilt and shame, adding more pressure at precisely the time you need the most compassion and support.

Dealing with over-commitment: There can be many reasons for ‘biting off more than we can chew’. A common one is because we are passionate about specific initiatives or subjects and really want to get involved… pushing ourselves beyond our own capacity.

Spotting the warning signs: If a team member is struggling to cope, it is likely they put on a brave face and suffer in silence. A Code of Care would equip us all with tools and resources to help us spot warning signs and create ‘safe spaces’ for team members to seek help.

The session will conclude with a detailed proposal for the 'Code of Care' and how it might be implemented.
