Accessibility, Sustainability and the Open Web

Accessibility, Sustainability and the Open Web

John Lockhart (jwlockhart)

The intersection of accessibility, sustainability, and open web principles forms the foundation for digital experiences that truly serves us all. Drupal is a powerful web framework that can create web platforms that are both inclusive and environmentally responsible - embodying the future we can build together.

Prerequisite
There are no prerequisites, although any personal experience you can bring to the workshop will be valuable.

Outline
The development of the W3C Web Sustainability Guidelines (WSG) have been inspired by the success of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Indeed, web accessibility and sustainability are intrinsically linked, with many shared goals and practices. We rely on open frameworks to achieve these goals. Drupal is a perfect example of an open web development framework. What approaches can we use the Drupal framework (with advanced configuration of software, infrastructure) to deliver accessible, sustainable web experiences, meeting the core principles of the Drupal Open Web Manifesto.

Learning Objectives
Understand the overlapping principles between web accessibility and sustainability, and how they reinforce each other in practice.

Identify specific Drupal configurations and modules that simultaneously enhance both accessibility and sustainability.

Learn practical approaches to measure and improve web performance metrics that benefit both user experience and environmental impact.

Identify how to implement the W3C Web Sustainability Guidelines within a Drupal framework.
