Committed to the Bit: Building a Robot Bestie with Drupal and Old Electronics

Qymana Botts (qymanab)

What do you get when you take a developer with too much usable tech waste and not enough impulse control and tell them a pun about their name? This is not the setup to a corny joke. It is the catalyst to a harrowing tale of hubris, friendship, and the joys of committing to a bit. What begins as a passing joke and an impulsively adopted side project ultimately culminates learning several lessons not just about design and engineering, but also a new perspective on human relationships to waste and consumption.

Prerequisite
There are no prerequisites for this talk. In fact, this talk will be largely focused on learning completely new skills in pursuit of an end goal, so it is beginner friendly.

Outline
This session will walk through:
- the process of turning a joke-based whim into an actionable plan
- Using Drupal to manage a lifetime of personal data and content for robot consumption
- Venturing into the land of micro-controllers and hobby robotics as a complete novice
- Learning to find new uses for old tech

Learning Objectives
Attendees will leave this session with tips on getting into arduinos and robotics, how to leverage their existing skills to trick themselves into attempting projects that make them gasp at their own audacity, and a high level overview of what it takes to go from "a person with a bananas impulse" to "someone who has somehow managed to build a robot".
