Sowing the Seeds of Sustainability: Lessons from Lille 2023
At DrupalCon Lille 2023, the DrupalCon Europe organizers decided to embark on a new journey towards a more sustainable event. We joined forces with Terra Verde, a sustainability consultancy agency, to guide and support us along the way.
Several initiatives have been implemented to have a positive impact on our environment and enhance the experience of our participants. While this approach was far from easy, we are convinced that it is essential for the future of DrupalCon Europe, the industry, and, quite simply, our planet as we know it.
Last year's key achievements were:
- Total carbon footprint: By measuring our conference's carbon footprint for the first time, we were able to set a benchmark for future editions with total emissions of 1,100 tonnes of CO2e.
- Zero food waste: Thanks to the Red Cross, which received our food donations, we were able to hold a zero food waste event while also supporting people in need in the local community.
- Renewable energy: The Lille Convention Center used 100% renewable energy, which considerably reduced our carbon emissions.
- Sustainable suppliers: 38% of our suppliers met the sustainability criteria. For this edition, we mainly focused on major suppliers who have a significant impact on the environment.
We also implemented sustainable initiatives at DrupalCon Lille 2023:
- T-shirt donation:Last year, we collaborated with an association to collect and donate hundreds of T-shirts to people in need, as well as more than 2000 masks. This initiative contributed not only to reducing waste but also to supporting the local community.
- Mascot auction: More than 1250 EUR raised from the mascot auction were donated to an association chosen by the auction winners.
- Wellness Area: We introduced a wellness area to provide a relaxing space for attendees, promoting overall well-being alongside our sustainability efforts.
In the future: We are aware that we are only at the beginning of our sustainable adventure, and that there are still many efforts to be made and many actions to be taken, but we are more than determined to continue our efforts with you! We want the conference, the participants, and the industry as a whole to benefit. Many obstacles may lie ahead, but we are convinced that this is the right path to a better future.
